Unfortunately, it has come to my attention that I am one of 'those people'. You know, the sort of person that seems to make everyone's life difficult because they cannot eat the regular stuff. We are the label readers in the supermarket and certainly, the one's that question the waiters (apologetically) in restaurants. We are the type of people who (through no fault of our own) become problematic dinner guests with special meals prepared separately so our needs can be taken into account. We are the lot that dreams about living a life free to eat whatever we desire but are sometimes relegated to the plate of carrot sticks at functions, which while healthy is certainly meagre in comparison to the spread that others consume.
I am comfortable with who I am and happier when I choose to avoid the foods that will make me ill, however for those of us living a gluten-free lifestyle, the biggest mission is usually seeking out the perfect bakery item, honestly, it's like an almighty search for the holy grail. Once we have discovered our favourite bakery that is dedicated to providing us with sweet treats, we are a customer for all of eternity and thankfully Melbourne is a paradise for those of us with dietary requirements.
Duck through the small doorway on Kooyong rd in Elsternwick and you will enter the wonderful world of 4Me Gluten Free, a humble space that allows you to be instantly enveloped by the sights and smells of a classic neighbourhood bakery. Since 2017, this family-run bakery has worked hard to create a varied menu of gluten-free, kosher, nut-free and dairy-free products without losing out on taste or texture.
If you are within the area or surrounding suburbs the name Yinon and 4me Gluten Free is the destination for bread, chocolate or cinnamon-laced babka, pastries galore, pizza bases and the lushest mousse cakes that you can sink your teeth into. I am no stranger to the goodies here at 4Me Gluten Free where a birthday cake is not met with terror, a pizza base is soft without the common cardboard texture and the cupcakes are easily devoured on the way home. My suggestion is to buy more than you think that you may need, for there will definitely not be any wasted.
4Me Gluten Freeowner, Yinon, has over 20 years' experience in the baking industry and will happily speak to you about any dietary requirements that you need whether savoury or sweet and I am sure you will mark this one on the map as a favourite.
4Me Gluten Free is closed on Monday and Saturday but open from Tuesday until Thursday 9am-5pm, Friday from 8am-4pm and Sundays from 9am-2pm for all your bakery wishes. I definitely recommend trying out 4Me Gluten Free in Elsternwick and if you're not within the area then put this on your bucket list. You'll be delighted by their affordable prices, enjoy window shopping over the counter, chatting with the lovely team and of course take with you a feast of flavours.
