Music lovers are in for a feast at this year's . With a range of performances which celebrate Beethoven's Piano Works, the 200th anniversary of the births of Italian composer Giuseppe Verdi and German composer Richard Wagner, concert goers can attend some fabulous events between the 4 May and the 2 June.
The Festival also features many of Brisbane's hard working professional and community ensembles and musicians, with performances from The Queensland Symphony Orchestra, Brisbane Symphony Orchestra, St.Lucia Orchestra, Orchestra Corda Spiritus, Queensland Wind and Brass, Queensland Youth Symphony, Brisbane Philharmonic, Brisbane Regional Youth Orchestra, Lipman Harp Duo and Brisbane Chorale.
With a focus on Verdi and Wagner in the 2013 Festival, lovers of opera and vocal music are definitely going to find a concert to enjoy. One of the standout performances will be the Verdi Requiem, presented by the Brisbane Symphony Orchestra and the Brisbane Chorale in the newly refurbished City Hall on Sunday, 26 May at 3pm. This work on a massive scale, will be familiar to many for its use of the "Dies Irae" movement in many commercials and movie soundtracks. The mighty power of this work will echo around the City Hall and raise more than a few goosebumps. Tickets start at $30 for C Reserve tickets.
Verdi's Women will feature in a concert of the same name on 11 May. This will be a theatre and music event featuring excerpts from some of Verdi's most famous operatic works. You can begin this evening with a pre-concert dinner at
301 on Ann for an extra $30. Tickets for the concert alone are $35.
Lovers of piano music are in for a treat in a day long event on Sunday, 5 May, when eight concerts will run throughout the day at the Queensland Conservatorium of Music, South Bank. Eighteen of Beethoven's Piano Sonatas will be performed, along with his Violin Sonata no.5 performed by Queensland Symphony Orchestra concertmaster Warwick Adeney Tickets for the whole day are $85, and individual concerts are only $20.
For something different, but bound to be beautiful, you could take in the ethereal sounds of the harp, when the Lipman Harp Duo performs on 23 May at the 4MBS Studios in Coorparoo. In this intimate setting you can hear a range of music performed on the harp, from as diverse composers as Bach through to Mussorgsky.
Chamber Music is also catered for in the Festival, with a concert on the 25 May at the 4MBS studios featuring cellist Alan Hall, pianist Tertia Hall along with friends Beth McBride, soprano and Alex Pattri, violin. Together they will present a program which will showcase the lives and loves of Clara and Robert Schumann & Johannesburg Brahms through their music and letters, narrated by James Hogan. (Tickets $25)
