Once again it is time to use the book, "Dirty Weekends" by Brad McCarthy, an obviously patient man with a good crew who mapped out the entire book kilometer by kilometer bringing us some amazing drives.

Try to follow in his footsteps by doing all the tours in the book, one at a time. This particular one is in the 6th edition, page 226 of the Bush Section called "the Scenic Rim and Cambanoora Gorge" tour. It can be purchased online and is a great investment in your outdoor adventuring.

The first step is to make your way to scenic Boonah. The town is situated off the Cunningham highway or you can take highway 93 outside of Ipswich and then back track a bit when you reach the Beaudesert-Boonah highway.

The views of the mountains, volcanic remnants from another era, frame the landscape, along with a lovely green carpet of soft grass and textured trees. Open spaces are great for grazing cows and a few scattered sheep.

Follow the directions in the book, carefully. It takes you into the rural areas around Boonah, the views are breathtaking, sculptured and vast. Everywhere you turn is a glimpse or spectacle that has you in awe.

If, like us, you get lost on Sugarloaf Road and take a wrong turn, you won't be disappointed at the views that greet you. It is easy to backtrack and find out where you went wrong so you can right yourself and carry on. Getting lost out here is a beautiful mistake.

At this time of year the summer heat has subsided, the winter chill has started to fill the air and the undergrowth and grass have all returned to an emerald shade of green.

Homes sit on the hillsides like beacons, gathered in spots near pastures where cows graze and fences divide the land.

The roads wind and the mountains surround you. You cross creek beds and dip down into forested areas. The road is pretty good, though steep in a few sections. Then you get up close and personal with Mt Maroon while following the road that leads close to the Maroon Dam.

Then you climb the Falls Drive to be on top with the peaks, coming out at Carrs Lookout, one of the most stunning views that you will come across in your travels.

Travelling now brings you to the Queen Mary Falls, a great place to stop and picnic. It takes a couple hours to get here and you realize you have spent quite a bit of time being lost, though it has been worth it.

Wander around the waterfall, do the circuit that takes you to the bottom, where the moss grows and the mist blows and photo opportunities are plenty.

On another day you will have to come back because you aren't even half done and have yet to see Cambanoora Gorge. This is an exciting prospect as the first half of your drive has been a real stunner.
