Here are a few things to think about this new year that will enable you to look after yourself and also be conscious of your impact on the environment:

1 - School is now back in for another year, all kids will be out in full force as they head back. And each one will be carrying backpacks. Do your kids carry backpacks? Do you? Do you wear them properly?

How many people have you seen with backpacks that hang half way down their back, pulling the weight backward, straining the shoulders? The strain of this weight hanging in the middle of your back takes its toll on the vertebrae, as well as straining the muscles in your shoulders and neck. Pinched and compressed nerves, bulging discs, all painful, can be avoided right now by learning how to properly wear a backpack. Save yourself and yours kids from the damage this can cause.

A pack should be worn with the waist strap and shoulder strap fastened, allowing these to distribute the weight. The strap, done up around the waist, will allow the bulk of the weight to sit there, the chest strap keeps it from wanting to sag back.

You can go to several places - Anaconda, Kathmandu or any of the other outfitters and get them to correctly show you how to wear a pack and buy the right size. This will save you and your kids years of agony and back problems.

2 - Do you water your garden with a hose? Do you know how to do this? You would be surprised how much water is wasted by incorrect watering. The Brisbane City Council has all kinds of information on their website.

If watering on a windy day point your hose down and get closer to the garden. You would guarantee more water where you want it to go. Watering before 10:00am and after 4:00pm allows more of that water to stay in your garden, especially on these hot summer days now that we are not getting much rain in our rainy season.

3 - And speaking of water - water machines are now popping up around the city, with machines from Healthy Water Ways already at Roma Street Parkland, and more to be installed at Southbank. It is brilliant and we can start to eliminate the disposable water bottles that are a hazard to our wildlife, and unable to breakdown. So it is with great pleasure that I am able to tell you about these water stations.

You can bring your own bottle, filling and refilling when you need, no more buying disposable, plastic bottles. Don't have your own bottle? This is where the brilliance comes in. You can purchase a bottle to fill and keep for use again. What a great way for us to do our part environmentally.

4 - We love to hike and head to the beaches. We take picnic lunches, light snacks, bottles and bags. But some of us keep forgetting that when we go out into the woods and onto the beaches that we need to bring our trash back with us. It is wonderful to see how pristine we can keep nature. All we need to do is put that trash back in the bag from where we got it, filing it in the bin when we get to one. Teaching our children will ensure that they know what to do when we are not around.

Following these few tips will allow you to be respectful of your self and the environment around you so you can get on with the business of enjoying life and what Weekend Notes has to offer this year.
