When you are looking to head out and about around Perth, it can sometimes be hard to think of where to go, then what you may actually do when you get there. If you are considering heading towards the Swan Valley, here are a few of the wineries on offer that you may want to visit.
1. Sandalford Wines
This is probably the winery most of us here in Perth are familiar with, being one of the oldest and largest wineries in Western Australia. It's also very easy to access, being on West Swan Road in Caversham.
Sandalford is popular as a wedding and corporate function venue, there is also a bar and restaurant on site - you can sit in each and drink while soaking in the views. The restaurant is described as being a marriage of modern Australian and contemporary Italian cuisines, including items such as wood-fired pizza, hand-rolled pasta, local WA seafood and kangaroo.
The cellar door is open daily from 10am til 5pm where you can indulge in a tasting before purchasing your Sandalford favourites and the restaurant is open for lunch Sunday to Thursday and dinner and lunch Friday and Saturday. Times do vary so best to look at their
website for more detailed information.
2. Upper Reach Winery
Upper Reach Winery may be familiar to some of us, but for those who aren't, you can find the winery on Memorial Avenue in Baskerville. Upper Reach is known for it's award-winning reserve shiraz, amongst it's other wines.
Upper Reach Winery was established over 25 years ago when owners Derek and Laura purchased a run-down vineyard. Now not only can you visit the cellar door to purchase your own wines, there is an on winery cottage you can book to stay in for the ultimate in indulgence. The winery is also available for weddings, tours through the estate, wine appreciation classes and there is an onsite restaurant and pizza bar open on weekends. During the summer, Upper Reach Winery also hosts a Summer Picnic concert series featuring local Perth bands.
Information about what's on offer, along with details about opening times for the cellar door, restaurant and pizza bar can be found on their
website . You can even order your favourite wines for delivery to your door.
3. funk 2.0
Funk is a little different - as it is both a winery and a brewery! Self-described as a fermentary, funk 2.0 is located on Swan Street in Henley Brook and offers a selection of craft beer, hybrids, ciders and wines. All funk offerings are unpasteurised and are also preservative, concentrate and sulphur-free, there are also no added sugars - the ciders are also gluten-free. The original funk venue, Funk Cider House, is on Benara Road in Caversham.
The Funk 2.0 kitchen boasts sophisticated but approachable pub food, designed by chef Cole Hall, to be matched perfectly with Funk’s selection of beverages. Expect hearty plates including cauliflower fried in cider batter with chilli and spring onions, the lamb shoulder served in cider jus, sticky lamb ribs with candy chilli or pork belly with nam jim. The majority of dishes are gluten-free with vegan and vegetarian options also available.
Funk is available for group bookings along with larger functions. Details about both venues, including bookings, a list of merchants and an online shop can be found
here .
4. Oakover Wines & Grounds
Oakover lies in the heart of the Swan Valley on Yukich Close in Middle Swan and is surrounded by lush lawns, mature trees and the amazing Oakover grapevines. Over three decades, Oakover Wines has developed a reputation for producing high-quality wines that can be enjoyed now and are perfectly suited to our Mediterranean climate and lifestyle.
Oakover Winery is a little different to the others in the Swan Valley, as well as offering an exceptional wedding venue, cellar and restaurant, there is also an onsite coffee shop - Fiori Coffee, just the pick up you might need after a long day exploring the Valley. Food offerings from the restaurant include items such as pasta, the ever-classic chicken parmi, fish and a steak and mushroom pie.
Bring along a cricket set and after your meal, you can enjoy a game or two with family and or friends. Oakover is only open Wednesday to Sunday, and times do vary, details about the venue along with menus for the restaurant can be found on their
website .
