In community development theory, a 'third space' refers to the social institutes which connect people outside of their home and their workplace. It's an appropriate name for this Fortitude Valley cafe, which seeks to bridge the gap between homeless people and the greater community.
Open seven days a week from 8.30am until 3pm, 3rd Space Cafe is a cafe and restaurant which provides a nutritional designed menu at a low cost. All customers are welcome to grab a coffee or takeaway snack from the front counter or enjoy a sit down meal with table service.
The 3rd Space menu delivers all the usual cafe favs like pancakes, burgers and salads. However, the cafe is run by a team of volunteer chefs, using ingredients donated by suppliers like OzHarvest and Food Bank, so the menu can change accordingly. At the time of publication, the dessert option was a very delicious looking bread and butter pudding with cinnamon custard.
As well as serving the public, 3rd Space Cafe is also a safe space for homeless community members, where they are afforded dignity and opportunities for socialising. The business also provides opportunities for training and employment and further tightens community links by providing a venue for social enterprise and community engagement opportunities.
The eatery is run by 3rd Space, a homeless not-for-profit organisation that assists homeless people with practical support. They also run a drop-in centre that provides a bed, laundry service, mail box, GP visits and cheap, healthy meals.
3rd Space Cafe is located at 505 Brunswick Street, Fortitude Valley, within walking distance of Fortitude Valley train station.
