Fabulous southern produce on the table at Fremantle
Perth people don't often get the chance to sample some of the fabulous produce from the Great Southern region of WA.

But 24 lucky people will have exactly that opportunity without having to travel to Western Australia's deep south.

On March 9, Don Tapa in Fremantle's new culinary hub, The Mantle, will be holding a long table dinner that features the produce of the Great Southern, combined with the fabulous cool climate wines of Mt Barker's 3drops winery.

The event is part of Australia's biggest wine and food festival Taste Great Southern which runs from March 8 to 25.

While most events are spread across the major centres of Albany, Denmark, Mt Barker, Ongerup and Katanning there are a couple of opportunities for Perth people to join the celebrations.

The Don Tapa event will feature the produce of the Great Southern prepared in the Don Tapa style of Marcelo Kretzer and Gerrard Mitchell.

3drops winery owner Joanne Bradbury says the event will be a long table sumptuous food extravaganza featuring Great Southern produce and cool climate wines.

"It will be an opportunity to experience Great Southern in the heart of Fremantle," Joanne says.

The restaurant's cuisine is modern South American with some Asian fusion and combines traditional flavours, regional inspirations, local produce and refined culinary techniques.

Joanne will be introducing guests to the winery's 2016 Sauvignon Blanc, 2017 Riesling, 2017 Nebbiolo Rosť, 2016 Chardonnay, 2015 Merlot and 2014 Shiraz.

Tasting notes for the wines describe them as:
Sauvignon Blanc. "Lively passionfruit and gooseberry aromas jump from the glass."
Riesling. "A fine, delicate structure defines this wine. Lime juice and floral flavours give the front palate a generosity and richness. The natural acidity runs the length of the palate providing the structure, drive and balance to the wine."
Nebbiolo Rosť is described as "A 100 per cent Nebbiolo made in a dry, savoury style, results in a fresh vibrant Rosť with aromas of strawberries and raspberries."
Chardonnay. "A golden wine which shows a harmonious blend of nectarine and grapefruit characters, nuts and French oak with a textural palate."
Merlot. "Lifted berry fruits fill the glass and are backed by persistent aromas of fine chocolate and hits of vanilla."
Shiraz. "A deep, rich wine with complex aromas of fruit, spice and hints of pepper."

The setting for Don Tapa in the new East End of Fremantle is a beautifully converted heritage warehouse.

People unable to attend the dinner can attend an urban cellar door at Don Tapa on Saturday March 10 and Sunday March 11 from 5pm to 8pm.

The cellar door will have complimentary tastings of 3drops current vintage wines, with small plates from the Don Tapa chefs showcasing Great Southern produce available to buy.
