I love a holiday special, so here are three more comics with their own unique Christmas issues. I might be pushing the definition of 'classic' this time, since some of these are more recent than the last 3 I reviewed , but they are still from a few years ago and reading them makes me nostalgic.

1. The Animaniacs Special Christmas Issue

If you grew up in the '90s and had a TV you will probably remember the cartoon Animaniacs. Yacko, Wacko and Dot Warner are the Warner Brothers and the Warner sister, three vaguely doglike creatures who are kept imprisoned in a water tower on the Warner Brothers movie lot. Every episode they escape and shenanigans ensue. Due to the popularity of the show DC created an Animaniacs comic series which ran from 1995 to 2000.

In this Christmas issue, the Warners foil a plot by a burglar impersonating Santa, with the aid of The Brain, a superintelligent evil mouse, and his hapless offsider, Pinky.

This one is really just for 90s kids who might be feeling nostalgic.

2. Giant 96 Page Comics Christmas Book

Book cover. Fair use.

This book is old school, dating from the '50s and proudly bearing the Comics Code Authority seal of approval on the cover. As the title suggests, there are almost 100 pages of family friendly comics, featuring heroes like Atomic Mouse, whose powers come from the pills he takes, like Roger Ramjet, or Asterix with his magic potion.

Then there is 'Lil Tomboy' , a girl who enjoys playing football (shock, horror!) interprets her dad's remark about throwing the Christmas presents out the window literally, accidentally foiling a robbery (a very popular plot in these comics). She kind of reads like an undiagnosed autistic girl to me.

Panel from Timid Timmy. Fair use.

Timid Timmy the ghost, whose entire ghost family must have perished in some unspecified tragedy, is afraid of everything. In this issue his dad accidentally traumatises him with a Jack-in-the box. The way Timmy's mum is so done with her husband's nonsense in this panel cracked me up.

3. Impact Christmas

Panel from comic. Fair use.

Impact was an imprint of DC Comics in the 90's which was aimed at younger readers. In this Impact Christmas special, Comet needs to rescue the president of the United States after he is kidnapped by robots disguised as the Norwegian Boys Choir. I love how bonkers superhero comics can be.

Panel from comic. Fair use.

To do so he needs the help of Santa, who at first attacks him with robot penguins and other objects using the telekinetic powers conveyed by his magical Christmas tree hat. That is an actual thing that happens in this real comic book that was really published.

Panel from comic. Fair use.

It's both as silly and as wholesome as a superhero comic can be, which certainly makes a change from some of the darker, more gritty stuff DC and Marvel have made recently.
