If you've got someone in your life who is a bit of a soccer nut, then try surprising them with one of these great soccer cakes. So whether you call it soccer or football, or whether you like chocolate cake or white cake, you're sure to like at least one of these great cake ideas.

The Soccer Field

This is one of the easiest cakes to make, so if you're not feeling too confident about your cake decorating skills this could be the cake for you.
For this cake you will need:
1 large rectangle cake
Green food colouring
Frosting of your choice
Wilton Soccer Set
Sugar or Desiccated Coconut (optional)

Make your cake and let it cool down, you can use any recipe or flavour that you want. Don't feel bad about using packet cake, we all use them every now and again. Once it is done you've got to ice the cake, first colour your frosting green. You can either ice the cake and sprinkle desiccated coconut or coloured sugar on it, or use an icing tip to pipe 'grass' onto the cake. If you choose the coconut or sugar, place it in a zip-lock bag with some green food colouring. Squeeze it around in the bag until it is all coloured. Once your cake is iced use either a piping bag to pipe white icing for the field outline, or just grab some white decorator icing. Now you're ready to place your soccer figurines on the field, and voila your soccer field cake is complete. Tip: If you want to pipe your grass read the instructions for the cakes below.

The Giant Soccer Ball

This cake will have you going down as best cake maker ever, without you even having to put too much effort in. You can choose with this cake to have your giant soccer ball sitting on a rectangular cake field, or just on a cake stand. Either way your cake will look fabulous.
For this cake you will need:
Wilton Sports Ball Pan Set
Baking Paper
Frosting of your choice
233 Wilton Tip
Black Food Colouring
Cake mix or cake recipe of your choice

Use these instructions for baking and decorating your cake. You can decorate the cake with the blue and red icing as the instructions say, but the black and white icing can have a more striking look. Before icing your ball cut a small portion off one of the ends so that is has a flat base. Trace out your shapes from the instructions, and then pin them to your cake to trace outlines. You can then fill in the outlines using any piping method you like. If you want to use a base then bake a rectangular chocolate cake. Pipe icing on to the cake using the grass tip, make sure you do not squeeze for too long otherwise the icing may look more like squiggles than grass. Make sure you place the ball on top of the base before you start icing it. Tip: Make your ball and your base a different cake flavour, this way you will probably suit all of your guests' tastes.

Mini Soccer Ball Cupcakes

These will be the most time consuming out of all of the cakes, if you want to take the easy way out you can buy these soccer ball candles rather than making your own soccer balls, they'll be a much more expensive option.
For this cake you will need:
Mini Styrofoam or paper balls from Spotlight
A black sharpie
A cupcake tin
233 Wilton tip
Cake mix or cake recipe of your choice
Frosting of your choice

These cupcakes are pretty easy to make, you'll need to bake some regular cupcakes and ice them using the Wilton grass tip. Then use your sharpie to draw rough soccer shapes on your mini balls. They don't have to be perfect, they will look great even if they are a bit rough. Draw the shapes first, and then colour some of them in black. Don't bother 'perfecting' your soccer balls, just colour some random ones black and they will look fantastic. When you're done stick a toothpick into each soccer ball, and then place them on top of your cakes. These are a great option if you're bringing something to school, because the kids can each have one cupcake rather than having to cut a cake.

So if you've got a little soccer fan give them one of these great cakes for their next birthday. You could even throw an entire soccer themed party for their special day. While Wilton products are recommended throughout this article, don't feel you have to use them. If you find a similar product that does the job it will probably have the same result, I am just more familiar with Wilton products. Happy baking, and happy decorating.

Hopefully your soccer fan will be as happy as this girl was:
