The Old Adelaide Gaol is one of Adelaide's best tourist attractions and, for one day every year the entry fee is reduced to just $3 per person.

In 1841 South Australia was only a few years old. We were the first state in Australia to be settled by free people.

But, convicts or not, it didn't take long for Adelaide to need a purpose built jail to deal with the criminals. The Old Adelaide Gaol is one of the two oldest buildings still standing in South Australia (the other is Government House) and was fully operational up until 1988. There's an awful lot of awful history in its 147 years and the $3 Day is a perfect time to explore and learn.

On your self-guided tour you'll see the hanging tower where 45 prisoners (including 1 woman) were hanged for their crimes.

You'll also see the cell blocks, the graves between the walls and so much more, including the site of an archaeology dig.

About 7 years ago a volunteer fell through rotting floorboards in the prison officers' tea room which started a 2 year investigation. The results were fascinating and the archaeology site has been left open for gaol visitors to view.

Wander around the whole site and who knows - you may even spot a ghost or two. Old Adelaide Gaol is widely reported to be one of the most haunted buildings in South Australia. Many a spooky tale is told from those who visit.
