What to do in Brisbane on a Saturday? Something fun? Something quirky? Something different? Look no further than the Backbone . It's a festival featuring emerging artists, across a broad range of disciplines, co-ordinated by dynamic young arts producers, each mentored by industry practitioners. The festival is held every year (happy 18th for 2011) and this year it will be held at the Brisbane Powerhouse on Saturday 29 October.

Last year was absolutely fabulous – an amazing array of musical acts, theatre, installations and a great vibe. It attracted the 20-30 something's who swanned about with cocktails, the artsy sort of family groups out for good clean family fun and the unshaven hipster types with their wonderful-to-eavesdrop-on conversations.

The 2011 program has been condensed into just one day (formerly it has been spread over two). There are about 60 acts/artists somehow packed into the program, which is causing me great difficulty as I pour over it deciding what to make time for. So far, on my 'must see' list is Babushka (four Brisbane opera sopranos offering a cabaret mash-up), Bhats (a local street artist creating a piece, live), Dyan Kai (the lad has a keytar!), the MegaMix (6 random artists who have been thrown together to create sound pieces just for the festival – it rocked last year) and (of course) Jordan Schulte performing a comedy piece called One Man Classic Simpsons. Genius.

Oh and did I mention this whole wild crazy ride is free! Yes free, my favourite price.

; your Saturday is sorted.
