22 Jump Street - Film Review

Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum are back in the hilarious action-packed comedy, 22 Jump Street; the second film in the Jump Street franchise, directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller.

Having recently watched 21 Jump Street, I was expecting a couple of goofy newbie policemen, who weren't particularly good at their job, but somehow fell in luck when it came to catching the bad guys .... And that's pretty much what I got from 22 Jump Street.

A film series not to be taken seriously by any means, and perhaps best to leave the logical part of your brain at home when you come out to watch it for full appreciation. 22 Jump Street does however highlight some real issues in American and generally Western society when it comes to young people; that is, drug abuse, peer pressure and the need to conform to expectations to fit in within certain school/college groups.

Without giving away too much of the storyline away, let me paint this picture for you to set-up the background of 22 Jump Street.

In 21 Jump Street, Morton Schmidt (Jonah Hill) is the chubby, nerdy (kind of a loser) guy with good grades who gets rejected by the only girl he had the nerve to ask to the prom and gets laughed at as a result, much to his humiliation. On the other hand, Greg Jenko (Channing Tatum), is the stereotypical good-looking, popular, athletic footballer, who is awful at anything academic and barely passes high school.

Somehow, these two polar opposite characters become best buddies where they team up to become cops. And so begins their first undercover investigation as high schoolers, where they discover times have changed and the stereotypes of nerdy and cool no longer seem to exist.

After somehow succeeding to capture the bad guys (drug dealers) in 21 Jump Street, in this film Captain Dickson has them working on another undercover investigation to locate the supplier of a new drug - "WHYPHY" (Wifi), which has resulted in the death of a college student.

Here the pair meet a bunch of interesting and funny characters along the way, and the old stereotypes of the cool jocks and the slightly strange arty kids. Through a series of coincidences, some police work and a lot more luck, the newbie cops find their place, both in their career but also with their friendship.

For a bunch of laughs, some action and a pinch of craziness, it's not a bad watch.
