I'm not a RSL regular, but when Liverpool's John Edmondson VC Memorial Club recently announced the opening of a new restaurant with the very Liverpool name of 2170 Bar and Grill, I thought I'd do the patriotic thing and check it out.
It's a shame that other locals weren't thinking the same thing as me tonight. It was quiet to say the least on this Tuesday evening. Very quiet. The lack of other customers does however allow us to get the full attention of the staff available. Nicely welcomed, we had the ordering system explained, the menu choices detailed and there was of course, a wide choice of seating.
The restaurant is adorned with photos of old Liverpool and local army history. There is a huge lounge area. I can't imagine ever seeing it filled to capacity. Flanking the entrance are two large funky and/or kitsch (depending on your point of view) bright green and red bubble tubes. I like it. The restaurant is kid friendly with the 2170 playground area.
The menu ranges from the cheap and cheerful fish and chips and burgers including a signature 2170 Burger. There is a range of chicken dishes with various additional toppings, steaks, pastas and kid friendly meals from $7.50.
I jump on the Soft Shell Crab ($22.00) when I'm told it's the catch of the day.
The Soft Shell Crab has some 10 pieces and some tangy and tasty dipping sauce. It's served with a large simple fresh salad and more than enough comforting crispy chips which smell as delicious as they taste.
Ms Pam's $26.00 Grilled Chicken Breast with BBQ Prawn, Bacon, Swiss Cheese BBQ Sauce and Vegetables is a mouthful of ingredients and is a large mound on the plate. It is not the most attractive dish ever served but it is certainly packed with flavours. But, and no one likes to hear a but, but If you like your vegetables just blanched then you'll like them here but Ms Pam is old school, and she likes them cooked. She sends them back. Always an awkward situation, but it's all handled well and cooked vegetables soon reappear.
It's the only glitch for the evening. I look around at all the empty tables and wonder what is wrong with people because there is nothing wrong with 2170 Bar and Grill. Unless you don't like your vegetables blanched of course.
