Having recently written an article on budget travel around Christmas in Australia, I decided to live the life I described over the summer. The article is about Aussie budget travel tips for Christmas. Here is a link to that article .

My suggestions in the linked article relied heavily on booking at bed and breakfasts because they are cheaper than motels and resorts and have more vacancies during summer. So, it's been exciting to live a life similar to my suggestions. I have been booking a range of accommodations in unfamiliar coastal Brisbane localities. But most of my bookings were via Airbnb. It helped that Brisbane is a large city in terms of landmass. That meant I had many different holidaying options in the one capital city suburban area.

My holidaying is going well after almost a week, so I'm keen to give my home more of a break and communicate what I am experiencing to those considering a getaway at Christmas. I realise that my budget for this summer of staycations could be even leaner, as sometimes it seems safely affordable to pay more. That's because, in Airbnb, the finer points of being a guest can be a bit unpredictable compared to motels and resorts.

By selecting hosts that charge slightly higher fees, it generally increases confidence. There are many additional selection tips, including skimming over recent reviews and how to locate elusive extra information about a listing.

Three Tips
1. Local holidaying certainly was limited but had some distinct advantages.

Thanks to travelling close to home, I am seeing new scenery, yet I can catch a train home and be at my home in one hour. That convenience is helping me relax a lot.

2. Airbnb selection tips: Selecting well at something like Airbnb with many bookings was going to significantly improve the holiday.

Clearly, it's a bargain to select Airbnb accommodation well. But to select poorly on any occasion is a significant letdown. I feel that it should be easier to select well. One tip is that if you want to know more about whether pets are present, read the safety section of all listings that you are seriously considering staying at and their house rules sections. They are near the bottom of each Airbnb listing webpage for a good reason, but their importance is appreciable. Skim-reading the last ten reviews of the accommodation is also surprisingly crucial, especially as some vital 'clues' about the present state of the accommodation can be discovered that way.

I also paid about twenty percent more than I would usually pay for stays of two to three nights. If I had gotten a memorable stay and it was cheaper than a motel, then at least I was saving money somehow. That scenario applied to selecting higher prices than the extremely low prices of the full range of stays on Airbnb.

I also stayed at a motel for a night while in the Southern Moreton Bay area. It was in the spirit of a holiday not to be too strict by forcing myself to live in one type of accommodation. I was on holiday, so I wanted to relax. However, I also wanted a satisfactory holiday rather than taking unnecessary risks on the lower ends of the bed and breakfast price range just to save further money.

Those tips are the main reasons behind my memorable staycation. However, for those wanting some further bed and breakfast accommodation selection tips, I have linked a suitable article by leading travel insurance company Allianz.

3. Use a sense of timing, and research is beneficial.

I taxied at the best times for cheaper fares, as budget travel often requires a sense of timing. Local bus and train travel are cost-effective and fun in small amounts, especially when timed well. For the safest possible trip, I would appreciate travelling in peak hours on suburban public transport.

Overall, a sense of timing and some effort in researching a holiday are what underpin the more conventional idea of avoiding busy days at peak prices and hours. I find it surprising how research doesn't spoil holidays and enhances them in many ways.

Three Links
I have added three links related to the main topic of bed and breakfasts. These links contain new information on top of what I have been explaining. From the global staycation company, Vrbo is the First Timer's Guide to Bed and Breakfast Etiquette article. A Quora topic worth some consideration is this Quora topic for those booking a week using a bed and breakfast for a family. By TripAdvisor is What is a Bed and Breakfast? In this article, that question induces several other questions about what to expect, why to experience them, and much more.

My recent holidays ultimately took 'a bit of initiative' to 'end up experiencing no initiative at all'. I am currently relaxed to the point where I want to budget for an even more relaxing holiday. The benefits of the experience are appreciable.
