With John McClane back on the screen in A Good Day to Die Hard (Die Hard 5), I thought I'd run through the release dates of other popular franchises heading our way in 2013.

Following hot on the heels of one Bruce Willis action flick, is another Bruce Willis action extravaganza. This time he's in G.I.Joe: Retaliation , revamped, though with some of the originals returning: Channing Tatum, Ray Park and Byung-hun Lee. Willis and Dwayne Johnson the new draw cards. In 3D it looks very slick indeed, and we'll see it soon on the 28th of March.

Bruce Willis and Byung-hun Lee return again August 1 with Helen Mirren and John Malkovich in Red 2 . Other comic to screen sequels returning to the screen this year include those Marvel lyrca crusaders. While we've seen the ads for Ironman 3 , coming April 24, there's also the Thor sequel, Thor:The Dark World , released 21st November.

Lycra heroes of a different kind will return in [B Kick-Ass 2]**, currently with the working title 'Balls to the Walls'. The date has moved back from July, an while there is no mention of the release date yet, we are looking between August 8 and September 26th, hopefully. If it's anything like the first one, please note that it's not for the kiddies!!

Another comic book return is the follow up to Sin City - Sin City: A Dame to Kill for set for the cinema on the 3rd of October. The majority of the cast are returning, with Rodriguez and Frank Miller teaming up again. Clive Owen, Bruce Willis, Mickey Rourke and Jessica Alba will this time have the company of Eva Green, Josh Brolin and Joseph Gordon-Levitt, among others, and while still black and white, this time, in 3D.

Hugh Jackman is back in The Wolverine , July 25th, this film set sometime after X-Men:The Last Stand.

Out August 1st is the sequel of sorts, 300:Rise of an Empire . New cast and story line, filling in back stories of the original.

There is also a new one for Trekkies, Star Trek Into Darkness arriving on our shores on May 16, in both 2D and 3D. Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto returning as Kirk and Spock.

Riddick is back for the fourth time, if you count the cartoon, with Vin Diesel to reprise the roll in cinemas September 12.

One must also mention, but little explanation is needed Scary Movie 5 (April 11), Fast & The Furious 6 (oddly Australia is the tail end of the global release, not seeing it until June 6), Paranormal Activity 5 (no date for Australia set but looking like October) and The Hangover: part 3 (May 23). We've already had a lot of hype about Anchorman 2, Anchorman: The Legend Continues with Wil Ferrell's visit at the start of the year. The cast is a who's who of comedians, and while there's no Australian date set, it would be safe to assume we'll be included in the New Zealand release on the 19th December.

Kids movies are not immune to this trend with the following sequels on there here. Despicable Me 2 (20 June), Smurfs 2 (September 12 - another oddly late date in the July global release), Cloudy and a Chance of Meatballs 2 (November 28) and Grown ups 2 (19 September).

Also gracing our screens on November 21st is the follow up to the Hunger Games, Catching Fire . Key cast members returning so Katniss and Peeta can be dethroned and returned to the arena.

Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters is the follow up film to Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief. Logan Lerman and Sean Bean returning 19 September.

Lastly, but by no means least, the big Christmas block buster is the next installment of the Hobbit - everyone's new Boxing Day activity. The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug is the next in Peter Jackson opus & in cinemas December 26th. Obviously pre-booking tickets will be required, or you risk being turned away as the sessions sell out quickly.

Alas, with all these old favourites returning, there is still no more news on the much anticipated Hell Boy 3 but at least I have a lot of choice at the cinema while I bide my time.
