The 2011 Ska Weekender Festival landed in Adelaide with a bang last Friday night at Enigma Bar on Hindley street, showcasing an extravaganza of local and interstate musical acts like Gogo-a-Rama , Finger Cuffs , Son of Dad , Hightime , The Bennies , Irie Knights and Kujo Kings . Metal-head haunt Enigma Bar was transformed into a 'casa de ska' with the essence of party vibes filling the room.

The line-up boasted more brass than a chamber orchestra, and local heroes Son of Dad shook the room with their iconic big ska sound with old favourites and new tunes to happy-up their audience.

Local band Hightime exploded onto the stage with a set to knock the socks off of anybody who dared believe that ska is a predictable genre... Their unique sound blended gypsy-infused latin and reggae with dirty, grimy, fantastic '90s punk. Not simply a set, but a bounty of dance anthems, musically intricate guitar licks and the hippest female screamer in Adelaide. This is a band that is sure to go far - and they did. Taking with them Son of Dad and The Bennies, Hightime travelled up to Melbourne and Sydney ( with yet more musical acts including rockers Sticky Fingers ) to complete the final leg of the jam-packed Ska Weekender Festival - icing the cake with an excessively awesome boat cruise show through Sydney Harbour.

Ska has come a long way since the Skatalites rocked it in the 1960s, but boy has it grown up. A genre-defying and hugely successful effort, Chopdog Promotions and Dying Scene pulled together a fabulous Ska Weekender Festival for 2011. Ska, ska, ska.

Craving a hit of ska but missed the festival? Check out upcoming shows from Hightime , Son of Dad , Irie Knights , Finger Cuffs , and Gogo-a-Rama .

HINT: Where Is The Love? Adelaide Rootz Fest is hitting Higher Ground on Friday 7th October from 7pm. Featured bands include Irie Knights, Aphsub, Yasmine Amari, One Planet, The Sherriffs and Minority Tradition.
