Cinema in 2011 looks to be following several treads from 2010 - with 3D continuing it's reign, remakes, prequels, sequels and franchise reboots and few original titles - here is a rundown of some of the anticipated titles;
Sucker Punch (2011) (Release Date: 24 March 2011),
This is the next feature from director Zack Snyder - it is a dark fantasy action-thriller, which happens to be based on an original story by Snyder - whose past credits include Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole (2010), Watchmen (2009), 300 (2006) and Dawn of the Dead (2004). Snyder is currently in pre-production on Superman: Man of Steel (2012).
Rango (2011) (Release Date: 7 April 2011)
This animated action-adventure feature film reunites Johnny Depp with his Pirates of The Caribbean director Gore Verbinski. The anticipated film also seems to reference Depp's portrayal of the late Hunter S. Thompson in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (1998).
Thor (2011) (Release Date: 19 May 2011)
Another year, another comic book adaptation, but this one is unusual for the fact that Kenneth Branagh is at the helm and it stars Chris Hemsworth, Anthony Hopkins and Natalie Portman.
Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (2011) (Release Date: 26 May 2011)
This one needs no introduction, but there have been some changes to the franchise, as the fourth installment no longer stars Orlando Bloom or Keira Knightly and features a new director in Rob Marshall. This latest film in the series is focused on Johnny Depp's Captain Jack Sparrow and his (mis)adventures, alongside new characters portrayed by Penelope Cruz and Ian McShane. Geoffrey Rush also reprises his role as Barbossa.
The Hangover Part II (2011) (Release Date: 26 May 2011)
The Hangover was the surprise hit of 2009 and this sequel reunites the original characters portrayed by Bradley Cooper, Zach Galifianakis, Justin Bartha and Ed Helms. Not much is known about the plot - except it will include cameos by Bill Clinton as himself, Liam Neeson and possibly Mike Tyson once again.
X-Men: First Class (2011) (Release Date: 2 June 2011)
This title is a prequel to the already existent X-Men franchise, similar to the recent Star Trek (2009) release. Directed by Matthew Vaughn, the science-fiction action-drama stars James McAvoy as Professor Charles Xavier and Michael Fassbender as Magneto.
Fast Five (2011) (Release Date: 9 June 2011)
This is the latest installment in the Fast and the Furious franchise, starring Paul Walker, Vin Diesel and Dwayne Johnson.

This third installment in the Transformers franchise, directed by Michael Bay and starring Shia LaBeouf, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Josh Duhamel, Tyrese Gibson, John Malkovich, Frances McDormand, Patrick Dempsey and John Turturro.
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 (2011) (Release Date: 14 July 2011)
The end of the Harry Potter franchise - this one is going to be a major event film.
The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1 (2011) (Release Date: 17 November 2011)
Another major 2011 release is the first part of the finale of The Twilight Saga
The fourth installment of the Mission Impossible franchise, starring Tom Cruise, Jeremy Renner, Simon Pegg, Paula Patton and Josh Holloway.
The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn (2011) (Australia Release Date Unknown)
Probably the most anticipated film of the year - this 3D feature film directed by Steven Spielberg, stars Daniel Craig, Simon Pegg, Cary Elwes, Andy Serkis and Jamie Bell as Tintin.
