I'm really not a big fan of a discount or a $2 store. Not that I don't love a bargain, because I genuinely do, but because I feel like every time I enter one I should be in an episode of American Pickers. There's no order, boxes and stuff are cramped everywhere, aisles are too tight and shelves are sagging from stuff heaped on top of them. What I'm looking for is very probably there, but the chances of me finding it without having to move a mountain of Aussie souvenirs or rummage through a barrel of stickers that don't stick is both slim and time consuming.

But now the $2 Superstore located on level one at Westfield Southland has changed the game and raised the bar when it comes to discount variety shopping. This place is definitely the new kid on the block and once you've been there you'll not go anywhere else.

This place is neat, orderly and light. It has everything displayed beautifully and there's no wandering about tripping over miscellaneous items as it's all laid out in a supermarket style. There are about five aisles, each housing particular wares, cards and gift bags, craft and stationery, party goods and lollies, pet stock and toys. There are cute window displays and an ever-changing product table out front showing off the best you can get for your $2. And everything is $2 or less. Cards may cost $1 each or cute glass milk bottles, perfect for kids milkshakes, are 2 for $1. Bargain! You will be surprised at what $2 can actually get you.

One of the most popular sections would have to be the beautifully colour-coded party goods. You'll find everything from cupcake patties, paper chains, invitations and cake stands to cutlery, plates and balloons in durable bright colours, ready to transform any space into a party Donna Hay would be proud of.

Then there's the stationery aisle. Always a thrill with the kids and definitely gives Smiggles a run in the affordability stakes. Brightly colored notebooks, pencils, sharpeners and erasers all beautifully packaged. In fact, some of their shmick stationery comes in small, plastic, clip-lock containers which are as useful as the item inside. You can turn any desk from drab to delightful with change left over in no time. Or how about a pencil case full of stuff as a birthday gift?

I'm particularly drawn to the bottles and jars and am yet to leave without a little something clinking away in my handbag. As mentioned, small milk bottles are available to buy and are just the same as they use in cafes. There's a fine collection of different sized and shaped apothecary jars, perfect for cottonwool in the bathroom or to store buttons in, or why not fill them with candy, stickers or bath salts and use them as party favours instead of the usual goodie bags?

The $2 Superstore should be your first stop when it comes to celebrations such as Easter, Father's Day or Christmas. At present they have walls covered in orange and black Halloween gear which I guarantee will be the cheapest you will find; from masks, witches hats and noses, all the way to lanterns, trick or treat bags and, of course, the candy to go inside them.

Look out for popular brands whilst shopping there, you'll be surprised at what turns up. I've come by Cadbury chocolate, Cath Kidston lip balm and hand cream and Nestle Wonka treats as well, and that's just to name a few. There is even a selection of American confectionery available. These are on a more rotational basis so it pays to drop by if and when you're in the area. Most other things are stock standard so are available all the time.

This store is always busy particularly around Easter and Christmas and school holidays and it's no wonder. You get an organized and affordable shop without having to leap-frog boxes or blow years of dust off items just to see what they are. I often give my kids $2 each and let them hunt about as I get my own list filled. They're happy they got something, because lets face it they always want something, and I am not financially ruined. This place is a total winner, try it out and see how far your $2 can go.
