With the attitude currently towards dogs and eating areas it is very refreshing to find somewhere that allows you to have your canine companion with you while you have a nice cup of coffee and a browse of the morning paper.

The enigmatically named in Darlington offers such an option. There is a building-round verandah with tables and chairs or stools overlooking the village and the trees of the Darlington Scarp.

The cafe (at number 2 Montrose - hence the name) has no commercial kitchen, so no actual cooking goes on there, but they offer an excellent range of coffees, juices and teas, as well a goodly range of cakes, slices, muffins, biscuits and sandwiches and other light meals.

is in the same building as Darlington Dental and so is often patronised by post-treatment clients as a small treat after the terror of anticipation has been replaced by the satisfaction of release.

Thus it was that I popped in for a bite and a view, for as well as food for the body, offers food for the soul with a wide variety of paintings and artworks by local articts on view. As these are for sale, the collection is ever-changing.

One orders and pays at the counter, which I did and then settled into a comfortable chair from a truly surprising range of styles - this a mock-Georgian, upholstered in gold brocade.

My flat white coffee ($4.50) was served in a bio-degradable mug and was excellent.

The food is served in folded cardboard boxes and bio-degradable cutlery, which gives one a golden glow of righteousness while tucking in.

I ordered a bagel and smoked salmon, cream cheese, chives and capers with a little side salad ($9). This was absolutely delicious, the bagel was both fresh and kosher, being produced in the traditional way by being boiled in water before being baked, which gives it its unique taste and flavour.

If you don't fancy the bagel (which I really recommend) you might like the toasted Turkish bread with chicken, ham, cheese and salad ($8.50) or maybe an individual quiche ($8), or a fresh croissant with either jam ($4) or ham and cheese ($7.50).

But, given the choice, I'd plump for one of the many cakes or slices. I did try a piece of the pistachio slice ($3.50) and that was excellent.

The Carrot Cake at is highly regarded and is delivered in a massive and delicious slice, liberally frosted with sweet topping.

fills a gap in Darlington village, offering as it does a meeting place, convivial space for couples and groups as well as solitude and peace for individual contemplation, and enjoyment of a nice cuppa and something toothsome.

Situated in easy walking distance of just about everything in the village, is an all round asset to residents of the little community and a treat for visitors.

Highly recommended.
