My family and I were looking for somewhere special to celebrate and decided to try 1918 in the main street of Tanunda. This beautiful little restaurant began life as a homestead built by a man named Friedrich Carl Gottleib Wallent in 1918 (hence the name.)

Fast forward to 1992, when the homestead was purchased by locals and became the first Barossa Bistro Grill. In 2009 it changed hands again and is now owned by the King family.

My family and I booked for dinner on a Tuesday evening and were surprised to see it completely full. While the interior is beautifully presented, it was a warm summer evening, so we were happy to be shown to a table outside under the verandah close to the beautifully maintained gardens. There was even mosquito repellent on offer for those (like me) who are susceptible to bites on summer evenings.

The menu was pricey but appealing and it was hard to make a decision. In the end we each ordered something different so we could have a taste of each others. I settled on a delicious, crispy-skin pork with roast apple and a bacon custard. All the meals were perfectly cooked and beautifully presented, and the service was of a high standard.

My daughter-in-law finished off with a cheesecake cocktail which, or course, I had to taste. A couple of wines and ciders rounded off the evening and we left well-satisfied and ready to come back again.

Open for lunch from 12 noon till 2.30pm and for dinner from 6pm till 9pm every day, 1918 is the place to go if you are looking for a high quality dining experience. You can visit their website here .
