1806 is memorable number for two reasons: first, it was the date that the cocktail was invented; second, it is the name of a unique bar in Melbourne - a bar that is fiendishly hidden in plain sight.
Walking through the door is almost like walking back in time, to an age of sophistication and elegance. The staff are dressed like butlers from the Edwardian era (or possibly from the '20's - whichever era they are channelling, it is highly classy). The decor and atmosphere of the place also breathes elegance and the music is well suited for the environment.
The bar has table service and fancy leather-bound menus that not only list, but describe and give a brief history of every cocktail on offer. And, considering that there are cocktails from every decade from the 1800's on, it is quite a list. There is also a selection of beers and wines (as well as snacks) available, but the primary draw of this place are the cocktails.
With friendly staff, delicious cocktails and a sophisticated ambience, 1806 is certainly a bar you should check out while in Melbourne.
