Every year Perth audiences have the opportunity to see some amazing foreign films during the Perth International Arts Festival.

One outstanding film this year is 12 Years a Slave. Based upon a book written by Solomon Northup, this is the true story of a New York man who was kidnapped and taken to Louisiana and was a slave on cotton plantations during the 1840's. This film concentrates on those twelve years of his life and the people he came into contact with, both the good and many bad people.

This film, which was directed by Steve Mcqueen, shows the harsh treatment the negroes received from their masters. Though Solomon was a educated man he was treated just like all the other slaves.

This is like a live lesson in history with horror at the same time as the punishments lashed out were frequent and quite brutal. It has great narrative and strong performances from all the cast.

Chiwetel Ejiofor portrays Solomon Northup with Brad Pitt and Paul Giamatti having main roles as well.

This film runs for 133 minutes and has received several awards.

12 Years A Slave is screening as part of the Perth International Arts Festival ahead of it's official release on 30 January, 2014.

Currently playing at UWA Sommerville Auditorium until 19 January then from 21 to 26 January at Joondalup Pines.
