The city of Mesa, east of Phoenix, has been revitalizing its downtown area with a new arts center and light rail. 12 West Brewing Co. is an excellent addition to Main Street.
You walk through a large patio that sits on the street side of the restaurant to enter the open warehouse-style main dining room. Long wooden tables with stools and multiple long bars lend a casual friendly air. Above the bar at the far end, multiple wooden signs list the multiple beers on offer. My Midnight Run was an oatmeal coffee stout with a smooth, mildly bitter taste. You also have your choice of ten signature cocktails, 12 classic cocktails, eight varieties of mead, and 11 types of wine.
While we waited to order and throughout our dinner, we enjoyed live music with a guitar player covering popular songs.
Their casual dinner menu of sandwiches and tacos is not extensive but offers plenty of options with well thought out ingredients, including The Beast Burger and Baja Fish tacos. My flatbread topped with bacon jam, arugula, dried figs, and goat cheese was colorful and delicious. My husband ordered the Caprese flatbread with pesto, burrata and roasted cherry tomatoes.
We had to rush off to the Mesa Arts Center for a concert so couldn't enjoy the enticing churro sundae with hot fudge and peanuts. That will be a good excuse to return. We can also return to enjoy one of the two balconies for outdoor dining or the entertainment in the downstairs bar.
