Somewhere new to go in the suburbs
My husband took me to 115 Grill & Brewhouse in Kew for Valentine's Day lunch which was really sweet of him.

As a place for a date it had all the requirements. It is that bit special with soft carpet, classy decor, attentive service, stiff white napkins and gleaming wine glasses that sparkle under the lights.

But given it was lunch rather than dinner we didn't really feel like a heavy meal. A portion of the menu was certainly devoted to that fine dining experience--mains such as a steak and then you needed to add your sides. If you added two desserts and a bottle of wine you would find yourself up for a pretty penny.

Instead we opted for a few of the share plates which I think were better value and a lot more interesting and just right for a lunchtime treat.

I'd been spoilt the day before eating at Blondie at the Melbourne Recital Centre where the food was cheap and truly amazing so in comparison the food here was competent but not in the same innovative class.

As you can see from the photos we had tiny crunchy prawns with a dipping sauce, a plate of devilled chicken pieces with strips of crisp celery and a dip, then an interesting dish (and what I considered the highlight of the meal) slices of pan fried haloumi cheese, with assorted purple and green lettuce leaves all topped with slices of mandarin and pomegranate seeds.

We then shared a bombe Alaska. This came with the showmanship of the waitress dousing it in alcohol and setting fire to the top.

With a couple of drinks it all came to about $100.

There were a lot more people eating in the bar than in this fine dining area or taking advantage of a lunch special which is two shared plates of your choice with a glass of wine or pint of their craft beer for just $25. This is on Monday to Friday 12pm - 2:30pm.

Where I think this suburban "nice' restaurant has its place is as a drinks place. They brew their own beer and you can view the vast steel vats which are housed behind the glass windows between the bar and the dining room.

They have a happy hour every night between 4pm and 6pm and with a few of their share plates such as the plates of chicken or sliders I think this could be a very happy hour indeed.
