The weapon is an M1928 Thompson Submachine Gun with the original forehand grip. This was most used by civilians and the normal flat forehand grip was more common as the war went on. As the painting says that it was one of the first issued it is very possible that it would have had the forehand grip. The Sten had a side mounted magazine at the front of the weapon, no wooden parts and as such looked completely different.
