The 100 Acres Park

Park Orchards is the home of "The 100 Acres" - a piece of bushland that has been preserved in the middle of suburbia. "The 100 Acres" is perfect for a stroll, hike or jog, and it will inspire you with it's luscious greenery and wildlife. The bushland hosts a number of different flora and fauna, but you must ensure you don't wander off the track to not only preserve them, but to ensure they don't hurt you. This area is known to have a few snakes, so always be on the lookout- especially with younger children. For this reason, try to wear clothing that will minimise skin exposure. Also, be mindful if it has been raining as part of the track is dirt and it can get extremely slippery. Proper footwear is heavily recommended for your own safety.

The path diverges quite often so it's a good idea to have a GPS-enabled devices or have a keen sense of direction to make sure you don't get lost as it is quite easy to get distracted by the scenic environment and lose yourself in the sound of chirping birds. However, the GPS-signals to tend to be inaccurate in the heart of "The 100 Acres" so be mindful of this.

There are a few information panels around to lead you on to different tracks, as the the area diverges into a number of many different directions, almost like a maze. Other panels tell you about the area, and the organisms that inhabit it. They are a very interesting read.

There are a number of geocaches in the area too - a perfect family activity. If you are a geocaching family it is well worth the trip and if you're not, this would be the perfect way to get into it. A group of them, with a Winnie-the-Pooh theme, would be perfect for a family with younger children. If you do attempt these just ensure you look after the environment, and again, be mindful of snakes. For more information about geocaching click here.

This area is also perfect for any scouting groups in the area who wish to go for a nature walk in preparation for a hike or something of the like. Even Joeys and Cubs will enjoy this location, especially since it isn't a far journey from nearby suburbs.

One of the cons of "The 100 Acres" is the lack of places to park your car, so you may want to find somewhere nearby to park your car before you head up. Also, sometimes the sounds from the football can echo up through so it may be worthwhile avoiding any time a game is on if you want the full experience.

Below are a group of images from my last visit to the area. These photos were taken in August 2012.
