School brings boundless questions, possibilities and sometimes concerns. Prep can be daunting for some and a celebration for others. Each child and each family has their own unique set of experiences, and a unique way of sharing this special time. What to pack for lunch, reading 'readers' and getting your first call from the school nurse are all now in (or about to be in) your toolkit of experiences.

As the term continues and everyone settles into the routine of school life, the excitement fades, the eagerness to share what happened dissipates and you may find that all you get from your loving son is "I don't know" and "I can't remember". Every day you can ask, "How was your day?" to be responded with "Good" every day. Even if their school was inundated with a swarm of European wasps and free chocolate fell from the sky, the answer is still "good".

So, how about NOT asking "How was your Day?"

Perhaps you could try asking your kids to explain their 3, 2, 1 for the day:
3 good things,
2 challenging things and
1 question.

If you have two kids, try to get them to listen to what the other is saying and get them to talk to each other. This is how you can listen in, encourage conversation starters when needed and remember the important aspects to inquire about at a later time.

Or alternatively, keep a list of questions that are not yes or no and provide a link to remember aspects of their day.

1. What did (insert friend's name) do on the holidays / weekend?
2. Was there anyone away today? Did that change your day?
3. What was the funniest thing that happened at school?
4. Which story did your class read today?
5. What are you looking forward to at school tomorrow?
6. What did (insert friend's name) have for lunch and/or snack?
7. Who sat next to you at lunch today? What did you all talk about?
8. What was the best part of your day today?
9. What was the most challenging thing you had to do today?
10. What did you play? Who did you play with?

And one more for good measure:
Can you show me something you did today?

Good luck with getting information and events from your boys. I would love to hear what questions work for you.
