$1 Dumplings Anyone?
$1 Dumpling Thursdays at The Balmain
The Balmain Hotel (72-76 Mullens Street) has a great mid week offering to gather friends Thursday night over a few beers, crafty ciders or $1 dumplings!
The modest exterior of the hotel has a neon lit up sign which is a standout amongst suburban backstreets of Balmain. There is a courtyard beer garden which is great for weekend long lunches. On this chilly winter's evening, head straight downstairs for some retro vibe. High bar long tables and stools stand along the exposed brick wall with booth seating in aqua and fuchsia vinyl covering. Tables and the brick wall are adorned with colourful plastic hydrangeas and spring blooms. The staff is friendly and helpful. Part counter / part self-service.
The dumplings are available in chicken, pork, prawn and vegetarian. They are served up in authentic bamboo steamers and condiments of red vinegar and chilli sauce.
There is a mandatory pub menu with burgers and fries, also refreshing alternatives such as chicken larb or san choy bow with Thai flavouring served with a quarter of crisp iceberg. Spicy and healthy. A good pairing with a glass of Italian sangiovese or ale.
