My three year old son is fascinated by trains. He loves all forms of transport, but trains rank particularly highly in his humble opinion. I don't understand it myself - it must be a male thing. If you have any significant others who are impressed by all things locomotive, get rid of them for the morning/afternoon/whole day if you're really lucky, at the Sandown 2013 Model Railway Exhibition .

My husband took my son to this last year and it was reported to be a rip-roaring success. The only drawback, hubby noted, was that he had to lift up our son constantly as most exhibits weren't low down enough for a then two year old to see clearly.

This exhibition is one of the largest and most respected model railway shows in Australia and there are all sorts of different set ups to be seen (I will confess that I know little about real trains and even less about model trains). Last year there was also a ride-on Thomas The Tank Engine for the littlies to have some hands on fun with.

This annual event takes place over the Labour Day long weekend (9th – 11th March) and is open from 10am each morning until 6pm on the Saturday, 5pm on the Sunday and 4pm on the Monday. Prices are $8 per adult and $5 per child, with under 4s being free. It is located at Sandown Racecourse in the Light Fingers Room. Get in touch with your inner trainspotter and steam along.
