The Australian Model Railway Association will be hosting a Model Railway Exhibition in the Robinson Pavilion in the Claremont Showgrounds Exhibition Centre from Saturday the 3rd of June to Monday the 5th of June 2017. Opening times will be 9am to 4.30pm on Saturday and Sunday and from 9am to 4pm on Monday. Admission costs will be $12 for an adults and $10 for concession/adult students. Children under 5 years will be free and tickets for children aged between 5 and 18 years will cost $8 dollars. A family of two adults and two children will put you back $28 dollars.



I only found out about this exhibition this morning. I'm not a huge fan of trains but thought "Hey, why not?" the admission was cheap and I thought my little girl might get a kick out of seeing the model trains. And boy was I right. The level of technical brilliance put into this show astounded me. There were model sets that spanned several tables and one so small it had been built into a toilet seat. The man who showed that one to me proudly told me it was called "Innaloo" Ha! Get it?



The detail put into the models was very impressive. There were Wild West sets with huge mountains and tunnels and churches; industrial sets with huge trains that whistled and let put puffs of steam as they circled their tracks; country towns with bakeries and shops and little model cars; long stretches of countryside dotted with trees and giant Lego cities filled with hundreds of figurines and cars and all sorts of things that whizzed and banged and twirled and blinked with lights.



I thought the old-school style models were very artistic and interesting. They reminded me of the ones that you can find in Myer every year at Christmas. I liked the hand-made houses and painted backdrops and plastic trees. The most impressive one of these models was a big one at the front of the pavilion that had a couple of large trains going round in circles. The trains were weighed down with sea containers and had lots of moving parts and lights. It was fun watching them go chugging round and round letting off steam and making little whistling noises.



The best part of the exhibition was the Lego displays. There were planes, trucks, cars, pirate ships, giant remote controlled vehicles, entire cities and towns filled with people and cars, snow covered mountains, a Disney castle and of course and lots and lots of trains made out of Lego.



The people who made these creations really are amazing at what they do. I was able to overhear one of them explain how much work goes into making a set. It takes a lot of people from different walks of life to design a model railway set from electricians to set designers to engineers to painters. You really will need a lot of time to get around this exhibition if you want to see all that is on display.



Food and drink is available for purchase and there are market stalls selling Lego and train merchandise if you're thinking of taking up a new hobby. There is even an indoor train available for kids to take a ride on. Parking is available at the Showgrounds for $5 or you could take the train which is only a short walk from the grounds. I had a lot of fun today. I would definitely go to this Exhibition again.
