As a Kelmscott local, eating at has been on my list for quite some time. And along came the perfect opportunity to visit after arriving home from work on a Friday night with nothing to eat at home. After browsing through their menu online and discovering they offer gluten-free pasta, my sister and I decided to get in the car and take the short drive down the Brookton Highway to check them out.

Arriving just before 6pm was a good move. We were very lucky to get a table without making a reservation. Not long after our arrival, the restaurant started to fill up quite quickly. It is easy to see that this place is definitely a hit with locals living in the foothills of Perth. Next time, I will certainly make a booking in advance.

This is a well-lit restaurant with simple decor that's influenced by the rural setting: you will notice a couple of cow drawings on the walls, which I was quite enamoured with. While not a large restaurant, it is still very spacious but cosy at the same time. This is definitely the perfect place to bring family or a large group of friends for a birthday celebration.

My sister ordered the cotoletta ($27.00). She was very impressed with the generous portions of veal and the hand-cut chips. In fact she commented that the chips "actually taste like potato". Indeed, according to their website they try to source as much local produce as possible, another consideration which is important to me when eating out.

I opted for the gluten-free version of the chicken fettuccine dish ($28.00). You will need to pay an extra $2 for gluten-free pasta, which is a very small price to pay. Again, the serving size was very generous. There was a decent amount of chicken, mushroom, tomatoes and spinach and I really enjoyed the creamy garlic and white wine sauce.

They also have a dessert menu but we were way too full to even contemplate eating dessert. However, next time I will have to go for a lighter meal just so I can have the pleasure of enjoying a lovely Italian dessert.

The waiting staff are very young (high school age), but I was incredibly impressed with their professionalism. For myself, when I go out to eat, service comes before food and Zia's certainly delivered.

Zia's is open for lunch Wednesday to Friday (11:30 am to 2:30 pm) and dinner from 5:30 pm Tuesday to Sunday. They have both dine-in and takeaway menus, so you can enjoy their food in the comfort of your own home if you prefer. They are currently unlicensed, however you can BYO and there is no corkage fee. It's heartening to come across a restaurant that doesn't charge you to drink your own wine.

Be sure to pay a visit especially if you're a Kelmscott/Armadale/Roleystone local. With impeccable service, good food at great prices and lovely decor, this place will definitely win you over. For those of you from out of the area, be sure to stop in for lunch or dinner after a day out exploring the Perth Hills.
