Boerewors (South African sausage) Tasting at The Zebra Crossing

What is boerewors, I hear you ask?

As you can imagine, not everybody has a South African connection and therefore might be totally oblivious to this very tasty South African delicacy. To directly translate: the name 'boerewors' comes from the Afrikaans word boere ('farmers') and wors ('sausage'). It is thought that the recipe for boerewors might have originated with the early migrants landing on South African soil - possibly with the Dutch coming from the Netherlands.

The unique taste of boerewors comes from the generous amount of spices that are used, particularly coriander, nutmeg, cloves, allspice and black pepper. But … in saying this, most South Africans would have a traditional recipe, usually passed down through the generations, the contents of which, can be a very tightly-held secret. In other words, not every tasty morsel of boerewors is necessarily the same, with a little bit of this or a little bit of that added, to suit personal preferences.

Now is your opportunity to experience the ever-popular South African boerewors.

The Zebra Crossing are hosting one of their must-do Boerewors Tastings on Saturday 21 September from 10.00am to 1.00pm, giving visitors plenty of time to be introduced to this 'foreign' delicacy. There is such a variety of flavours, visitors might well need the full three hours to taste-test all of them. Look out for the:

  • Traditional
  • Sosatie
  • Garlic
  • Pepper
  • Cheese
  • Karoo
  • Chilli
  • Chakalaka - Chakalaka is usually a spicy South African vegetable relish, but in this case is now an actual flavour of sausage
  • Egte plaas wors - genuine farm sausage

  • In addition to the above tempting delights, visitors to The Zebra Crossing will be able to sample:

  • Russian sausages
  • BBQ pork rashers
  • Chilli and garlic pork rashers plus …
  • Lamb - skaap - wors - usually a thinner sausage

  • The Zebra Crossing is a family-owned and run South African shop selling everything from lollies to everyday groceries to South African wines and beers and, I believe, boast having the biggest range of jerky and biltong on the Sunshine Coast.

I'm not sure if you are aware, but The Zebra Crossing now have their very own kitchen and are serving up very tasty South African inspired breakfasts, lunches and everything in-between , seven days a week, between 9.00am and 3.00pm. Check out the menus below - there is definitely something 'different' to suit all tastes.

While you're visiting The Zebra Crossing (perhaps waiting for a delicious coffee), look out for the unique South African gifts on display - you will always find a 'must-have' to take home. Ask me, I know!

If you're an adventurous Australian or a South African feeling deprived of 'tastes from back home', bookmark the next Boerewors Tasting at The Zebra Crossing for a sampling of South African cuisine and a touch of African ambience.
