Sun Ho Restaurant is located within the Kogarah RSL Club, very convenient if you live in the south and want to indulge in a yum cha craving without having to drive into the city and brave the long queues.

On weekdays Sun Ho have a promotional discount of 20% off yum cha, which is a great bargain.

We enjoyed yum cha recently on a weekend, and arriving at 12:30pm, did not have to wait for a table which was fortunate. The food trolleys came thick and fast. When we wanted something which the trolleys did not have, they were very happy to put in a special order for us.

They have all the usual suspects, and we sampled many types of dumplings including har gow (prawn), chiu chau (pork and peanuts), and vegetable dumpling.

We also had BBQ pork pastries, pork buns, chicken's feet (huge ones), egg tarts (very flaky pastry) and deep fried pork dumplings (ham sui gok).

I found the dumpling skins to be a little on the thick side; were they thinner, the overall eating experience would be less stodgy with a better ratio of pastry to meat. The food was under-seasoned for my taste, which is good if you are limiting your salt intake.

I was happy to see that they had beef tendon, one of my yum cha favourites, but it was not cooked quite long enough so the result was a very chewy gelatinous mouthful which took a long time to masticate.

There are 2 dining rooms - one appears to be for smaller tables, the other for larger tables. The volume is not too loud so it is easy to hear your dining companions. The service was wonderful, attentive and friendly, and the waiters were quick to refill our teapots.

If you live within 5km of the club, you are technically required to be a member in order to enter, but this is at the discretion of the club and many will waive this requirement for first-time visitors. If you live outside of the 5km zone, you could bring some ID to prove it.

There is a very small parking lot attached to the club, and street parking in the surrounding area.

Address: 254 Railway Pde, Kogarah NSW
Yum Cha is served from 10am 7 days a week, and although the website says it is open 10-3, on our visit the food seemed to dry up around 2pm.
