Well here's an event that's the cat's whiskers! Picture this: you, yarn and between nine and fifteen cats all hanging out in Red Hill. No it's not some crazy cat lady fantasy, it's a reality! Yarning with Cats is hosted by the Cat Cuddle Café, combining all the fun of knitting, crochet and kitties.

It's almost two years since the café opened its doors on Musgrave Road. Every cat in the café is available for adoption through Pussies Galore Rescue, an organisation that has been saving feline lives for over 25 years. Like most animal rescue operations, they're running on limited funds and rely heavily on generous volunteers and donations. That's why Cat Cuddle Café hosts fabulous furry fundraisers like this one every week.

Yarning with Cats is conducted by a fur-cilitator, Karen, who can teach you the ropes if you want to learn some basic knitting or crochet skills. Experienced knitters or crochet fans are welcome too. You can bring your own project or try one suggested by Karen, such as a cuddly cat toy or a crochet square. Yarn, hooks and needles are provided, plus all the pat time you can handle with the beautiful fur-babies for just $25.

The café upstairs will be open too, so you can grab a takeaway coffee and cake and bring it down into the shelter area, though owner and operator Katina warns, "You'll need to guard your cake!"

Bookings are limited to around ten humans, so you will need to book early if you're keen to knit with kitties.

"It's a lovely atmosphere," Katina says of the event, "Last week it was yoga with cats, but I think the yarning one is quite lovely."

If you happen to fall in love with one or more of the cats or kittens while you're there and you pass what Katina describes as the 'Spanish Inquisition' they put potential adopters through, you might end up taking home more than a crafty project. She says they make every effort to ensure rehomed animals are going to people who understand a pet is for life and that it's a long-term commitment.

Where does the money go?

Most of the money from these events helps with the huge vet bills Cat Cuddle Café faces. Vet care is needed to ensure each of their little charges is fit and healthy for adoption. In their first year of operation vet bills reached over $150,000. Cat Cuddle Café and Pussies Galore also pays for food to care for the cats homed with foster carers. One volunteer I spoke with said the café owners, foster carers and volunteers often donate a lot of resources too.

This particular event will be focussing on raising money for a kitten called Batfink. I spoke with Batfink's foster carer Nat about his health."Batfink was a street cat," Nat told me, "he came to us very lethargic and underweight."

Hundreds of dollars worth of vet checks later, they've discovered poor little Batfink has juvenile cataracts on his little eyes, which aren't set the correct distance apart. He's blind and may have to have his eyes removed altogether in order to prevent infections. But wait, there's more. He's also having absorption issues making him very underweight for his age. He's going to need a CT scan and will possibly need several surgeries. At six months old, this cuddly little kitten may have a raft of health woes, but he's not short on love, affection and nutritional food.
