On a whim we ventured down to Yamba, which is situated in the Northern Rivers NSW far north coast, for a bit of R and R and a spot of fishing on the weekend. We went online and found a vacancy at a favourite place to stay (we stayed there last year over a long weekend). The Blue Dolphin Holiday Resort has become a popular place recommended by many and I can understand why. Set on the river with the Clarence River on your doorstep, it is a peaceful and relaxing spot for a getaway. A caravan and camping ground with two pools, one with 2 waterslides and the other a tropical pool with heated spa, absolutely a must over these cold winter nights. There is also a big playground, games room, tennis court, undercover BBQ's and hire equipment such as go-karts, kayaks and motor boats. Lots of activities and facilities for families.

A big bonus too is that it is pet friendly most of the year in designated areas of the park i.e. camp sites (excluding school holidays and peak periods). Dogs are also allowed at Pippi Beach.

Facilities and amenities at the Blue Dolphin include camp kitchen with BBQ facilities, TV, fridge and microwave are situated undercover. There is a guest amenities building with showers and toilets, guest laundries with coin operated washing machines and dryers, swap & go LP gas, parking, public telephone, onsite internet kiosk, and security entrance gate.

Accommodation is a choice of Waterfront Units, Villas, Cabins and Tent sites (powered and unpowered). This year we decided rather than camping we would stay in a cabin. Our cabin was clean and tidy with room to move. We had 2 bedrooms, with a double bed in one and bunks in the other. Linen supplied with a fully equipped kitchen, lounge and tv. It was quite warm, cosy and very comfortable.

After a good night sleep we had a fantastic day exploring and fishing on the Yamba river, but as usual, no fish to be caught! We did try a tip from the local fishermen who appear to be catching many - "Buy green prawns from the deli at Coles or Woolies, not frozen ones from the bait shop". And I love this one - "What you don't use can be thrown on the barbie later". We gave this a go but maybe we are just not cut out to be fishermen. Some lessons may be in order.

Must not forget too the local residents at the Blue Dolphin - the "pelicans" are a sight not be missed and certainly don't go hungry, pacing around and squawking at each other eagerly waiting for the fishermen to throw their leftovers. Heaven help if you get in their way, pelicans share their food with no-one!

In town there are some great little shops including Shack Yamba and Revival Yamba, a funky retro music surf shop. Coffee stop was a favourite cafe that makes fabulous coffee and the best passionfruit and coconut slice around. The Caper Berry Cafe is definitely worth a visit.

There are many places to explore in Yamba and the Clarence Valley. Yamba is close to national parks such as the Yuraygir National Park and Angourie is just 5 minutes from Yamba and MacLean a 20 minute drive west of Yamba. Yamba is also home to some beautiful beaches (11 in all) from Main Beach, to Turners Beach. These two are both beautiful beaches with rock pools for the kids to explore.
A great website with a wealth of information and with things to do in Yamba and surrounding areas is Visit Yamba and don't forget - for those that love the markets, the Yamba River Markets are on the 4th Sunday of every month, Ford Park, River Street Yamba.

Yamba, a place to fish, chill out and relax and explore.

To get there:

Yamba is 1.5 hours north of Coffs Harbour, 2 hours south of the Gold Coast. Exit the Pacific Highway at the Yamba Turnoff and follow the signs towards Yamba. Follow the Yamba road for 17 kms to Blue Dolphin Resort.
