Some of the pictures and trailers I've seen remind me of the 2005 'War of the Worlds' film. Does it bare any resemblance?

Good question! Whilst there are some similar elements between the two, I think WotW was more concerned with the family relationships (the main character with his children), whereas WWZ separated the main character quite early on (even though his family's safety was a high motivator for him), so that he could concentrate on the investigation of the mystery....
