When the
Socceroos play Bahrain in a World Cup qualifier on the 10th of June,
Stadium Australia might be hosting the sort of big game that only comes around every four years.
While nothing could eclipse the drama of that night in 2005 when Australia defeated Uruguay for a place in the World Cup, it is possible that the upcoming encounter will produce its own excitement, as it could be the date on which the green and gold book their spot at next year’s tournament.
To qualify for
South Africa 2010, Australia needs no more than one draw from its final three
fixtures (away to Qatar on June 6, at home to Bahrain on the 10th and at home to Japan on the 17th). And should that precious point not be secured in the Middle East, it will surely be Sydney that once again plays host to the wild celebrations of Harry Kewell, Tim Cahill, Mark Schwarzer, Lucas Neill and company.
Only a decade old, Stadium Australia has been the site of some of this country’s
most famous sporting memories, including
Cathy Freeman’s emotional gold medal,
Johnny Wilkinson’s devastating drop goal and
John Aloisi’s unforgettable penalty. Come June, a new chapter might be written in this wonderful venue’s burgeoning history.
