My first reaction when I Googled this venue was, "this is Merivale?". Work in Progress is the one of the latest bars to reach the main business area of the city, on King Street and the vibe is colourful and up-beat. It's a pop-up focussed on art curated by Glenn Barkley and Franck Gohier. But if you find the coloured pencils, there are a few areas where you can draw on too.

The menu is full of Thai dishes. I tried the Betel leaf wraps with smoked trout, fresh ginger, lime, peanut, and caramelised roasted coconut and the Marinated mince prawns wrapped with egg noodle and plum sauce. Both of these were really tasty, I wasn't expecting that much flavour from the food. The mince prawns were particularly good value for money.

The drinks menu is simple, including a few cocktails. It's always easier to choose drinks when there are fewer choices. My friend wanted a sweet wine, which they didn't have, but the bartender quickly made a really nice blackcurrant liqueur-based drink for her.

The music was good too, played from a range of genres. When the DJ played Lauryn Hill's 'Doo-Wop (That Thing)', I realised how many bars play music that goes hand-in-hand with the prohibition theme (and matching decor). It was nice for a night, to not have to pretend to be in another time, it's just a straight-forward, no fuss place, that focusses on art.

There aren't queues to get in yet, so visit Work in Progress early (and while it's still around).
