Most people, when they think of authors, think of those popular within fiction genres. They think of certain writers who are prolific within the crime, romance, science fiction and fantasy fields, rather than those who have made a living out of writing on true-life events. The fact is, biographies and other non-fiction titles are equally as popular within the book industry, yet they rarely get as much coverage (unless they feature on a talk-back radio program or television show). Often the non-fiction topics written about are extremely well researched, cover a vast range of categories and interests, and are engaging and insightful. The authors usually have a strong interest in their chosen area, and try to write their books in a way that also inspire others to see their passion in a similar way.

Over the years, non-fiction writing has gradually gained in popularity, and, after the success of last year's inaugural event, Deakin University is set to again host the Word For Word Non-Fiction Festival . Celebrating non-fiction writing in all its facets and forms, this literary festival runs from Friday 11 September until Sunday 13 September (inclusive) and allows fans of the genre to listen to a wide range of guest speakers, attend workshops, and mingle with their favourite writers. Tickets for the events vary in price from $20 to $50 for adults, and $15 to $40 for concession (depending on the event chosen), and will be held in various locations around the Geelong region- Deakin University Waterfront Campus, Belmont Library and Waurn Ponds Library .

This event aims to inspire the next generation of non-fiction writers, and will feature an Opening Night and Keynote Address from international bestseller Professor Tim Flannery. Other noteworthy authors who will be holding talks during the three days include surf journalist Sean Doherty, broadcaster and writer Ramona Koval , acclaimed biographer Robert Hillman , physician and writer Dr Karen Hitchcock, former model and television presenter Nicky Buckley, and a host of other memoirists, lawyers, academics, editors and researchers. Each will discuss aspects of their chosen field, talk about their books and explain about their writing processes. Topics covered will include sports, economics, true crime, sexuality, personal journeys and travel.

Word For Word is an innovative literary festival that covers a diverse range of interests and celebrates the best that non-fiction writing has to offer. If you hold an interest in this writing platform, then it will be well-worth attending.
