Woorabinda is a scenic nature reserve and wetlands located in Stirling in the Adelaide Hills. The area is rich with native fauna and wildlife, and offers a scenic walk around the lake through colourful native flora.

When I visited on a beautiful sunny day there were lots of aquatic birds with chicks on the banks of the lake, while invisible birds in the trees made their melodious calls.

It was near the middle of the day - I understand that the diversity of birdlife is even more visible early in the day and the evening.

The lake area is very popular with local families and children, while I was there several groups came to feed the ducks and ducklings.

Groups of people of all ages were walking around the lake, and it is also a favourite place for model boating enthusiasts.

Dog owners can bring their pets on leash only due to the abundance of wildlife including bandicoots, lizards, frogs, koalas and possums. There are plenty of other off leash parks elsewhere in the local area where there is no wildlife to threaten.

If you're serious about bird watching, there is a great hide on the opposite side of the Woorabinda Lake from the entrance on Mabel St/Woorabinda Rd. There are bird identification charts mounted inside the hide to help you get the species names of any birds that you spot.

The lake is man made, part of the railway history of South Australia. The area was known as Crossfell from the 1880's until around 1950, and even in 1891 the population was around 67 people living in 16 houses .

In the 1920's the South Australian Railways built this dam to provide water for steam engines that travelled through the hills to Bridgewater. You can see an 1883 photo of a steam engine at the nearby Mount Lofty station here . The water from the dam eventually flowed down to Aldgate station, where it was held in tanks for use when needed.

People visit here for all sorts of reasons - the animals, birds, flowers, the exercise of walking around the lake, or just the serenity of the tranquil environment.

Thankfully the Friends of Stirling Linear Park have looked after this place well for the benefit of all of us.

A self guided walk brochure is available to help you navigate the Reserve. There are marker posts dotted around which correspond to numbers in the brochure with helpful information.

There are also sketches of local birds to aid identification.

If you came up to the Hills to see Woorabinda, there are several other exciting attractions nearby that you will also enjoy. Historic Mackereth Cottage and the Almanda silver mine are not far away at Scott Creek.

Warrawong Animal Park is free, and just down the road. Or if you are heading to Mylor the check out the Bootmaker's Cottage .

Going back to the city? Check out the suburb that doesn't exist , or call in to explore the Waite Precinct at the bottom of the freeway.

Enjoy your escape from the city.
