Situated just a short stroll from the tranquil Canning River, Woodloes Homestead is perhaps one of Perth's best-kept secrets. Apart from a few Cannington locals 'in the know' and a handful of history enthusiasts, very few people in Perth are aware of this charming colonial residence which, back in the late nineteenth century, was home to Francis Bird, one of the proprietors of the early timber firm, Mason, Bird and Company, and later the chief government architect of the Swan River Colony. Celebrating this lovely old home and the rich colonial history of the Cannington area, on Sunday May 1st the Canning District Historical Society is inviting one and all for the .

Taking place from 10am until 3pm, there will be plenty to see and do for people of all ages and inclinations. History enthusiasts, vintage-lovers and the curious will relish the opportunity to take a peek inside the picturesque old homestead, and amble throughout its well-maintained grounds. As well as a variety of stalls to peruse, and displays of household exhibits and artefacts dating from the early colonial days, the open day will feature photographic displays, beautifully restored machinery, working heritage engines and vintage hand tools. Additional demonstrations and displays will include Sikh turban-folding, wool-spinning, the Australian Model Ship Society and much more, while some special highlights of the day will be the Volunteer Fire Brigade's vintage fire truck, and free historic bus tours escorted by a local historian. Tours will be approximately 45 minutes in length, and since there will only be four held (taking place at 12 noon, 1pm, 2pm and 3pm), bookings are essential.

In a nutshell, the is certain to be a fabulous day out for the entire family. Situated in a beautiful part of the Perth metro area, close to the Canning River Regional Park, it's also an area of great historical significance. Admission is by a gold coin donation, making it a very affordable excursion.

Woodloes Homestead is situated on Woodloes Street in Cannington. To find out more about the Heritage Open Day, call John Parker on 9451 8538 or email [email protected].
