Wombat Hill House is the latest venture of the team behind one of Australia's most revered restaurants - the Lake House in Daylesford. Just like its upper crust sibling or 'house on the lake', Wombat Hill House is located in a truly beautiful setting. Alla Wolf-Tasker and her team refer to it as their 'house in the gardens.' The gardens to which they are referring are none other than the Wombat Hill Botanic Gardens, which offer a wonderful view of the surrounding Daylesford township.

Unlike the Lake House, no reservations are required at Wombat Hill House. This is indicative of its atmosphere, which manages to be very casual yet civilised at the same time. Wombat Hill House is already a popular destination for locals and day-trippers alike. Yet, even in peak periods, it never feels overcrowded or stifling. This is due to the effective layout of the venue, which involves a series of separate dining areas.

The main dining room has tables for both smaller parties and larger groups, in addition to a lounge area. The open plan kitchen gives the place even more of a homely feel. There is also a courtyard off to the right, as well as a large open air dining space situated at the back of the property. Much like its exquisite interiors, the courtyard and garden are beautifully presented and are an absolute pleasure to spend time in.

Such attention to detail is carried over onto the menu, which changes seasonally to ensure that local produce can be sourced wherever possible. Many of the ingredients are procured straight from the Wombat Hill House garden. The menu is diverse without being overwhelming and caters for vegetarians and vegans.

Breakfast options may include brioche french toast, zucchini and corn fritters, ricotta hotcakes and granola with seasonal fruits and yogurt. For lunch, patrons can sample delicate and delicious dishes ranging from antipasto platters to pizza to gourmet salads. A wide range of sweet treats are also available, which may include cupcakes, cookies and brownies. Wombat Hill House is licensed and there is a bevy of wine, cider, beer and cocktails on hand.

Along with dine in meals and drinks, patrons can also choose to take away various meals and snacks, in addition to gourmet provisions and gifts, which are available at the store.

Wombat Hill House is a worthy addition to anyone's Daylesford itinerary. It is a place that is warm, family friendly and packed full of whimsy.

Thanks for the great review. I'll certainly drop in and try some of those hotcakes next time I'm in Daylesford!
