If you didn't know it was there, you'd be forgiven for driving straight past Wirreanda Park in Buderim. From the roadside, it appears as a largely overgrown and very shady plot of land.

But it's the large, majestic trees that shade the park that give this park a unique quality. Wirreanda Park is home to two towering rows of Weeping Fig Trees (or Ficus benjamina as they are scientifically known).

These trees were planted over a century ago to elaborately frame a driveway of a Buderim homestead. While the homestead is all but demolished, and the surrounding town has changed dramatically in the past 100 years, these towering trees still stand tall, a testament to their strength and beauty.

Wirreanda Park is the kind of place that sparks your childhood imagination. Images of woodland creatures, fairies, imps and elves come to life as you peer through the dark green leafy canopy and through the winding roots of the fig trees. And the large trees provide the perfect canvas for a game of hide and seek. If you feel like staying longer after a stroll through the trees, the park also offers a number of picnic tables, a playground area and public restroom facilities.

The local shopping complex on King Street, opposite the park, offers a myriad of takeaway food options and a very nice cup of coffee.

The park is accessible by road (parking is available off Short Street) and local buses stop directly in front of the park (route 616). Check here for bus times.

Top tips for your visit to Buderim's Wirreanda Park:
1. Bring a camera (with a flash, is it quite dark under the tree canopy).
2. Wear long sleeves or bring insect repellent if you are prone to bites, as the dark, damp foliage can attract some unwanted insect friends.
3. Parking is best off Short Street, and there are Disabled Parking spots available.
4. If you are visiting on a weekend, be prepared to share the park with a Bride and Groom or two, as the trees are a popular site for wedding photography.
5. Pack a picnic lunch and enjoy the park. If you forget, or feel so inclined, the shopping complex across the road offers takeaway options including pies, fish and chips, and coffee.
