You need to be either very brave, very crazy or most likely both to participate in the Winter Solstice Swim 2017 on Saturday 11 June at St Kilda Beach, South Pacific Health Club.
Brave or Crazy?
Running (or should that be swimming) for the 8th time, the Spirited Away Winter Solstice swim is Australia's only winter night swim. Although being held a little earlier than the winter solstice (Wednesday 21 June 2017), the swim is run in the tradition of Pagan festivals.
The water temperature is usually around a chilly 10 degrees, but you will get to jump into a lovely warm pool heated to 38 degrees at the South Pacific hot pool and steam room immediately afterwards.
Entries are now open and there are several options depending on just how crazy you are. Registrations close on 8 June 2017.
Not sure you can make the distance? The new Splash & Dash option might be for you if you'd like to give it a go but are worried about the cold and dark.
Event choices are:
Splash and Dash – Curious $35 (200m run, 200m swim) The run is optional, the swim is not 500m – Silly $55 1000m – Crazy $60 1500m – Fully Certified $65
The swim starts at 5.45pm with check-in on the beach side of the South Pacific health club at 5pm.
St Kilda beach at night - would you jump in?
Your entry includes:
• Event certificate confirming that you are mad
• Event swim cap
• Entry to the South Pacific hot pool and steam room to defrost
• After party with a live band (food and drink extra)
If you are not acclimatised to cold water swimming, you can wear a wetsuit and read about how to acclimatise here.
You can also get involved by volunteering as a kayaker on the night. Kayaks can be supplied or bring your own. If you'd like to be part of this fun event without getting wet (unless you fall in), email firstname.lastname@example.org
