Windsurfing

Watching an experienced windsurfer take to the waves, there is a sense of effortless grace about every movement. That is why it comes as such a shock to learn that windsurfing takes a combination of stamina, strength and coordination. And a lot of falling over.

Behind the sweeping views of Sydney Harbour, is a complex network of rules and regulations, governing acceptable locations for windsurfing. With various sailing crafts around the harbour, it is important to obey the rules that will prevent collisions. There are also certain areas of the Harbour that are off limits for windsurfers: including the areas around Ryde Road Bridge.

If the Harbour is dotted with windsurfers negotiating aquatic traffic, the NSW coastline is home to a variety of competitions and surf clubs. It costs $50 to become a member of the Wollongong-based Ilawarra Yacht Club. As an IYC member, it is possible to take part in a number of competitions, including the 8 hours marathon (held in March). Further up the NSW coastline, the Merimbula Sailboard Club is the home of the Mambo Merimbula Classic: an esteemed windsurfing competition.

For the novice windsurfer, however, it is advisable to take introductory lessons.

Located on the Esplanade of Balmoral Beach, the Balmoral Sailing School runs a variety of adult windsurfing classes, providing introductory courses, private lessons, practical and theory courses. For $285, you can spend 4 hours riding the gentle waves of this harbour beach. If this introductory course whets your appetite for a more structured approach, $410 will get you an 8 hour practical and theory course, representing a first step on the road to certification. For students of the University of New South Wales, the Windsurfing Club provides both social and competitive racing opportunities at a price of $20 per year.
