From acclaimed director Stephen Frears (Philomena, The Queen), Meryl Streep stars in the true story of Florence Foster Jenkins, a much-loved New York heiress and socialite who obsessively pursued her dream of becoming a great singer.

Convinced of her own talent, the voice Florence heard in her head was beautiful, while to everyone else it was hilariously awful. Her husband, aristocratic actor St. Clair Bayfield (Hugh Grant), had protected his beloved from the truth for years. But when Florence decided to give a public concert at Carnegie Hall in 1944, St. Clair knew it was only a matter of time before her beautiful dream would be shattered.

Funny, moving and featuring a brilliant performance by three-time Academy Award winner Meryl Streep, Florence Foster Jenkins is a fitting tribute to an irrepressible diva whose passion for music was matched only by her determination to share it with the world.

To celebrate the release of Florence Foster Jenkins on Thursday, 5th May, WeekendNotes subscribers have the chance to win an in-season double pass or the ultimate Mother's Day merchandise prize pack.

It is inspiring to hear about people and their determination-Florence Foster Jenkins was such a person - my reason for wanting to see the movie.

I've known about her since the 1980's when at parties her record was put on as a special treat and of course for everyone to go into an uproar as we thought it so funny yet awfully crude. I never imagined a film would be made about her. Hands up for Meryl Streep to take on the role. It will be very interesting to see how they keep the audience intrigued before we actually see her perform.
