More fondly known as 'The Prom',
Wilson's Promontory is probably the most-loved national park in Victoria. Many of us would have enjoyed a holiday or two there before. If you have, you'll already know that it's a special part of Victoria. If you haven't, it's time to discover it for yourself.
Located on the southern-most tip of the Australian mainland three hours from Melbourne in the
Gippsland region, this coastal wilderness area is a 50,000-hectare reserve comprising walking tracks, mountains, forests, fern gullies, tranquil rivers, secluded beaches and many other natural wonders to explore. Its diversity means that there's something for everyone to enjoy.
The camping and caravan sites besides the picturesque
Tidal River are so sought-after, a ballot is held to allocate summer accommodation! Now, that's popular. It's an idyllic little world of its own, with its very own general store, post office, take-away food shop, as well as open-air cinema and medical services during summer.
There are so many things to see and do, it's best to explore the Parks Vic website (link above) or
this site, so you can tailor your visit to your own tastes. A few must-dos, however, include:
A walk along Squeaky Beach with is pure white quartz sand, which squeaks when you walk on it. The beach used to be called 'the singing sands'.
Check out the spectacular scenery along the drive from Yanakie to Tidal River. Drive slowly and look out for wildlife and, I mean, look out for wildlife. We had to give way to an emu during our last visit!
Walk up
Mt Oberon for one of the best views in the state.
Do the Lilly Pilly Nature Walk and soak up a spectacular eucalypt forest and rainforest.
