Until 13 March 2011, the
Australian Museum will host a special exhibition in order to showcase the shortlist of the Wildlife Photographer of the Year Award 2010.
Of course, there is more to the award than simply naming the best photograph or photographer; there are a variety of categories that entrants are judged within. Apart from the prestigious
Eric Hosking Award, which seeks to encourage conservation through animal photography, there are also a variety of sub-categories.
There are prizes within the behavioural category for birds, mammals, and all other animals. There is an underwater section, as well as a category for black and white nature shots. Appropriately in our era of ecological tumult, there is a special category for endangered wildlife.
There are even categories for the younger photographers, divided into the 15 to 17 year or 11 to 14 year bracket.
The Australian Museum is
located in the centre of Sydney, on College Street. The vast sandstone edifice is home to a variety of compelling exhibits, which would be worth a look after your visit to the photography exhibition.
Entry for an adult will cost $17 and concessions may enter for $12. This is an event that may be particularly interesting for animal-mad children, so the Museum has set a reasonable rate of $9 for children between 5 and 15 years old. There are discounts for families and an 'extra child' can enter for $6.
