Beginning this Saturday, 16 March 2013, the City of Whitehorse in Melbourne's east will play host to a variety of workshops and programs around the issue of sustainability. You can see the entire program here, but here's a snapshot of a few of the events going on (bookings are essential for each):
Growing Fruit Trees at Home Workshop Sustainable Gardening Australia will show you what you need to do to plant and keep fruit trees in your very own backyard.

Keeping Chooks for Beginners Workshop Being a fan of backyard chookery, I highly recommend a workshop that will gain you understanding about what keeping chooks entails. Run by the folks at Very Edible Gardens, the workshop will cover the basics of keeping chooks, such as understanding the chooky mind, and knowing how to keep them safe, healthy and well-fed.

Permaculture Blitz The people from Very Edible Gardens will be running a Permaculture Blitz, where they and you will spend a day designing and implementing a kitchen garden for an as-yet undisclosed community space in the City of Whitehorse (such as a school). You will gain some hands-on experience in building a veggie garden from scratch and help the community at the same time.

Plasticized: An Ocean Catastrophe Movie Screening & Q&A
The 5 Gyres Institute is intent on finding solutions to plastic pollution. This documentary follows their expedition to the South Atlantic and will show how our oceans are faring with the massive amount of plastic they are carrying.
Following the screening of the movie will be a Q&A with Director, Michael J. Lutman.
