Melbourne has a wealth of luscious gardens and hidden barbecues, making picnics a favourite summer activity.

Boyd Park in Murrumbeena.

My preferred picnic location is Docklands Park. With the intriguing Blowhole sculpture overlooking the unconventional playground, and a grassy hill which is as much fun to roll down as to picnic upon; this location has been a favourite of mine for years.

But, a park does not have to have had endless council dollars ploughed into it to be a fun picnic destination. It possibly does not even need to be a park- one of the most fun picnics I have had was on a median strip on Cochranes Road, Moorabbin. It did have picnic tables and a barbecue, but being a few metres away from traffic on both sides might mean it is an often overlooked picnic spot.

More conventional locations with a distinctly Australian feel might be Wattle Park or at the top of 1000 Steps. Or perhaps your picnic location of choice is more immaculately cultivated, like Victoria Gardens or The Royal Botanic Gardens.

Leave a comment and share your favourite picnic spots.

My favourite park is Ballam Park in Frankston. With two massive play grounds (one for older kids, the other for the small set) heaps of tables, shelter, BBG's and even a half court basketball/tennis court it has something for every one.

Royal Botanic Gardens are hard to beat for a picnic and lush scenery. Going to a different spot there each time gives a new perspective and a breath taking feast for the eyes. After a decade of laying down the picnic blanket, throwing a frisbee and taking in the surrounds, the pleasure factor still rates a perfect ten.
